Countdown in Photos: Day 11
Seattlest will be counting down to 2011 with a series of posts on our highlights of this year and what we're looking forward to in the next. Got a list to suggest? Send it our way. See the entire series here.
Granted, I've only been shooting concerts and live music for about a year now. However, I have been a fan of local Seattle music for ages (which I choose not to specify as it will date me, and no one wants that). The first band that I had any kind of kinship or following for was We Wrote the Book on Connectors (WE). I took shots with my crappy point and shoot, recorded live renditions of Captain of the Future on an even crappier cell phone and shared these unfortunate moments in time with the band. They were nice enough to talk to me even after all that and even on occasion offering tickets to shows. This floored me, the fact that a band would care at all about a random fan.
I've learned since then not only are WE that way, but so many other bands in this city sincerely care about their fans. I don't know if this is a Seattle-specific occurrence or a nation-wide trend but it brings fans and bands closer together making a connection nothing else could quite create. I digress. WE are a great band that just has fun. They don't take themselves seriously, but they do take the music seriously. The lead singer, Mike Votava, doesn't like being considered nerd-core or a joke. While the lyrics may not be particularly serious, his rocking is. You need look no further than his rock kicks... they're epic. If you can catch a show, you'll find out what I'm talking about. One of their best shows I've seen was in the small Sunset Tavern for the Guerilla Candy Birthday Bash (formerly Ear Candy) last March seen below. Travis is practically kissing one of their fans, as is his style.
