John Lennon tribute Tonight at The Crocodile

Raise your hand if you like The Beatles. Everyone? Yeah, we thought so. They are unquestionably one of the most influential bands of all time and their songs have withstood the test of time in a way that few others have. We should all be thankful for their music.

Something a little less beneficial to the world is the murder of John Lennon on this day in 1980. Shot down in New York City by Mark David Chapman, his death marked not only the end of political hopefulness and radicalism of the 70s, but the chance that The Beatles would ever reunite to rock again. Who knows if they would have ever gotten back together and put out more albums and toured endlessly a la The Rolling Stones, but that single shot put an end to any chance of you or I ever getting to find out.

When you combine true love and devotion to their music with the sad reality that they are gone forever, the recipe results in tribute bands. We know, we know, tribute bands can be a little dicey. It can feel like a time machine hologram where something is just a little off. Despite how good they are, you know it’s not the real thing. But sometimes, who cares.

The death-versary of the most famous musician of the modern age is one such example. Which is why, tonight, in commemoration of his death and influence, you should go see Apple Jam tonight at The Crocodile. Apple Jam is a group of guys who play Beatles songs. They are so good that they headlined Beatle Week 2009 in Liverpool and tonight they will play Beatles as well as John Lennon songs. Opening up for them is Jakael Tristram and other guest musicians who will perform all the songs from Lennon's album Double Fantasy, as well as the posthumous Milk and Honey.

The show starts at 9, doors are at 8 at tickets at $18. It beats listening to Abbey Road by yourself on this saddest of rock and roll calendar days. Give it a chance.
