State Decision Indicates Closure Likely for Columbia City Cinema

Yesterday, the Washington Department of Financial Institutions denied Columbia City Cinema's application to register its common stock, and ordered the company to cease and desist from selling the shares.

This is obviously pretty terrible news for a theater that is trying to merely keep its doors open until the end of the year. According to the cinema's website, it had received about half of the money necessary to keep the doors open. With yesterday's decision, it seems likely we are witnessing the last few weeks of the theater's existence, though we haven't yet heard any word from the owners as to exactly what is going to happen.

Now might be a good time to take the trip, as the cinema has a pretty good lineup, including what is apparently the only copy of Conviction, a much anticipated indie drama starring Hillary Swank and Sam Rockwell, that they actually picked up from the Uptown when it closed.

This would be the third local cinema to go under in just the last month, joining the Uptown which closed on November 28 and the Neptune which is now being converted into a music venue. We imagine there will be more news coming from Columbia City Cinema itself in the next few days, so we'll keep you updated as soon as we hear about it.
