Seattlest Gift Guide: Gifts for Film Lovers
Sometimes film people are obnoxious. We get it. We’re always overanalyzing character motivations and wardrobe choices. We read closely into soundtracks and editing techniques. Sometimes it’s probably really annoying to go to movies with us. But you know what? The holidays are a time to forgive and forget our many flaws and give generously to those you love. So even if you don’t quite understand who Truffaut is or why the hell he’s so “revolutionary,” now’s your chance to show that cinephile in your life that you still love and appreciate him/her, despite constant guffawing during the latest Spielberg flick. After all, his hobby could be much worse.
So here’s our gift guide for all those Seattle film buffs and aspiring Kurosawas:
Northwest Film Forum swag: NWFF is one of the city’s finest film establishments, and anyone who is interested in film in Seattle should be involved with this organization. You could buy your cinema fanatic a NWFF Holiday Gift Certificate, which is good for admission for two to any regularly priced NWFF events. They also sell amazing t-shirts, hoodies and mugs. Finally, for the truly devoted, a NWFF Membership is the gift that keeps on giving all year 'round.
Locally made films on DVD: There have been a couple recent releases of Seattle-made films on DVD, just in time for the holidays. The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle fared well both locally and at Sundance, and we even sang its praises a few months back. This bizarre, hilarious and dark film was just released on Tribeca Film and New Video and can be purchased here. 1985’s Trouble in Mind, directed by Alan Rudolph, was one of the earlier films to be shot here. It features Genevieve Bujold, Kris Kristofferson, Lori Singer, Joe Morton and Keith Carradine and was just released on Shout! Factory. It’s the perfect time traveling gift to catapult you back to Seattle in the 80s.
911 Media Arts tuition: Why not support the future success of that aspiring filmmaker in your family with tuition to one of 911 Media Arts many classes? The organization offers workshops and certification courses for beginning or advanced editors, videographers, photographers, animators, graphic designers and more. 911 also offers membership, which helps out with equipment rental and class fees.
SIFF goods: SIFF is not only home to the country’s biggest and longest film festival; they also have fabulous programming year-round at SIFF Cinema. Gift certificates are available for films and events, clothing items are there to round out the wardrobe, posters and catalogs will help get you pumped for next year’s fest and SIFF Membership entitles you to amazing deals and opportunities at the festival as well as during the rest of the year.
Landmark Theatres gift cards: Sometimes you just need a night out. What better way to wind down from the holidays than a trip to the movies? Landmark Theatres offers $25 giftcards, which makes for an awesome stocking stuffer. These theaters show the typical fare as well as underplayed art films throughout the city.
There. We’ve done our part. Now there’s no excuse for last minute presents from Barnes and Noble. Happy gift giving.
