Scoreboard: The Weekend in Seattle Sports
Happy Holiday
Let's play a quick game of Jeopardy. We'll give you the answer and you tell us what the question is...
The second Gulf War started; Bill Gates stepped down as CEO of Microsoft; Facebook was created; Barack Obama was a state senator, U.S. Senator, and President of the United States; Hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast and the Saints won a Superbowl; and Beyonce made the best music video ever, but Taylor Swift won the award.
If your guess was: "What are things that have happened since the UW Huskies last played in a postseason bowl game?" then you are correct! If your guess was something else, please share in the comments below.
That's right, the Huskies are headed to the Holiday Bowl in sunny San Diego on December 30 -- their first postseason appearance since 2002 -- thanks to their Apple Cup victory over the weekend. This is a good thing for UW fans. The bad thing? They'll be playing Nebraska in a repeat of the Huskies' September 18 matchup against the Cornhuskers, in which UW, um, did not win.
In The Doghouse
You know what's hard to beat? A team that comes back from halftime and drains 10 of the 11 3-pointers they attempt. The Gonzaga Bulldogs faced just such a problem Saturday, when what had been a close game going into the half was blown wide open by the hot hands of Illinois. The final result: a 73-61 loss.
Out of the Doghouse
Washington basketball had no trouble living up to their ranking this weekend, in their 108-79 drubbing of Texas Tech. Coming off a rough Maui Invitational performance, the Huskies cruised to victory thanks to Justin Holiday's 20-point output. Matthew Bryan-Amaning added 18 points and two crucial blocks.
Craziness
Albert Einstein defined insanity as "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Well, the Seahawks may be insane. Considering the fact that they have made a pattern out of failing to muster up first downs in the first quarter this season, the end results of those games are as different as could be. Against the 49ers, the Seahawks didn't see a first down for the first 24 minutes of the game. The result: 31-6 Seattle. Last week against the Chiefs: Seahawks lose 42-24. This Sunday against the Carolina Panthers: a 31-14 come-from-behind win for the home team. Well, if being crazy helps the Seahawks stay atop the NFC West, we'll take it.
