Outpouring of Help After Tragedy in The Sub Pop Family
Andy Kotowicz, a dear friend of many in the Seattle music scene and longtime member of the Sub Pop family, was tragically taken from us a little over a month ago in a car accident. We'd rather not recount the details (if you're interested you can find them here), but he was taken suddenly and entirely too soon. Being such an established member of the music community in Seattle and nationwide, there's been an enormous amount of support and kindness toward Andy and his family. First, a foundation has been established, The Andy Kotowicz Family Foundation, and you can contribute by writing a check payable to the Andy Kotowicz Family Foundation can be mailed to:
Andy Kotowicz Family Foundation c/o Sub Pop Records 2013 Fourth Ave., 3rd Floor Seattle, WA 98121
If you're more interested in getting together to celebrate him in style with local/Sub Pop music, then you can head to the benefit show this Saturday at the Showbox Market with Shabazz Palaces, Vetiver, Fruit Bats, Wolf Eyes, Pissed Jeans, Mudhoney, A Frames/AFCGT, and Michael Yonkers; we're especially excited about Fruit Bats and Shabazz Palaces. This is sure to be a beautiful night of music, friends, and looking toward the future.
As if that weren't enough, two more shows are planned for this month featuring Sub Pop bands. Ben Bridwell from Band of Horses has planned a benefit show in Charlotte, NC on Friday Dec. 10. Here are a few more details on that:
Ben will be performing a show at the Pour House in Charleston, SC on December 10th with the proceeds going to the foundation set up for the family. Birdsmell and Friends will feature Ben with members of Band of Horses performing songs old and new, and special guest Holopaw will open the show. (Tickets are $25 and are on sale now.).
Also, on Wednesday December 8th there is an Andy Kotowicz Benefit featuring Secret Twins, Rogue Satellites, City Center, Swimsuit, Powerteam, and Everybody's In at The Savoy in Ypsilanti, MI. Tickets are only $5 and can be purchased here. Let all of your east coasty friends know about these, no doubt they'll be shows to remember for a long time to come.
Last but not least there is a charity auction jam-packed with music memorabilia from all genres. What a great way to help out the foundation and get your family or sweetheart a Christmas present they will never forget. Head over to CharityBuzz.com to check out what they've got. Even though I have only been a part of the musical groupies in Seattle for a short while, it's obvious that it's more than just money and fame. It's family. It's part of what makes this city special.
