SSLYBY + The Lonely Forest at Neumos Tonight

While reading glowing reviews about their early Weezer-esque debut certainly piqued our interest, we’ll admit that it was tonight’s Neumos co-headliner’s name that ultimately prompted us to check them out in 2005.

Regular readers may recall we disclosed our predilection for ridiculous nomenclature with our shout out to Bellingham’s Timmy Sunshine & The Conductors a few months back.

Apparently, we’ve always been and always will be suckers for weird word combinations.

As with Mr. Sunshine et al, what really endeared us to Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin was the clever wordplay coupled with masterful pop instrumentation.

SSLYBY, as anyone who has to type their name more than once or refer to them on Twitter calls them, have firmly established themselves as pop rock heirs to the squandered promise of a young Rivers Cuomo. Along with the likes of young bands of a similar ilk including Surfer Blood, The Drums and The Spinto Band, SSLYBY play straight pop rock that juxtaposes upbeat instrumentation with humorously darker lyrics .

The Lonely Forest, who share the bill with SSLYBY as co-headliners, will be familiar to many who frequent this and other music blogs. The Anacortes band has carried the torch for the area's young pop rock scene for some time. Many would date that torch-passing to 2006 when the band was crowned as the winners of the EMP's 21 and under competition Sound Off!

In addition to sharing countless stages this fall, the TLF and SSLBY have also shared a common producer in Chris Walla and continue to share similar pop sensibilities.
