Be-Bop to the Jazz Walk
We don’t know what jazz brings to mind for you. Perhaps it’s a smoky, sultry dive accompanied by the sexy sounds of a tenor saxophone. Maybe you think of big bands blasting in 1940’s dance halls. Or (hopefully not) you think of Kenny G. We really hope you don’t think of Kenny G, even if he is from Seattle. Anyway, the point is, jazz means lots of things to lots of people. From Glenn Miller’s “Moonlight Serenade” to John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps”; Chet Baker’s “My Funny Valentine” to Miles Davis’ “So What”; Ella Fitzgerald singing “Mack the Knife” or Astrid Gilberto’s vocals in “Fly Me to the Moon,” chances are you’ve heard some jazz and liked it. Even if you don’t consider yourself a fan of the genre.
Now’s your chance to take that curiosity about/passion for/obsession with jazz straight to the U-District, which is hosting the second annual U-District Jazz Walk.
Our list of well-known jazz above is pretty limited to big band and be-bop. The Jazz Walk lineup is certainly not (thankfully). The Saturday night event features funk, swing, Latin, free, modern, gypsy, electronic and straight-ahead bands as well as the expected big bands. Local acts including Eli Rosenblatt, Katrina Kope, Jason Parker/Josh Rawlings Duo and Katy Bourne Trio will be lighting up the stages across the District. LUCID Jazz Lounge is putting the whole event on, but there are participating venues all over the area, including Caspian Grill, Wayward Vegan Café, Mars Bistro and more.
A $10 general admission ticket gets you access to all of the musical acts, drink deals and a special LUCID LIVE Jazz CD. A limited number of $35 tickets are also available, which also includes dinner at one of five participating venues.
It’s all bobbin’ on Saturday, November 6 from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. (those jazzers stay up late). It’s gonna be swingin’!
