BSG OMG at the EMP: Battlestar comes to town
Some days are big deals. Christmas, the day after Thanksgiving, Superbowl Sunday: all notable. But every now and then a day comes around that really blows the others out of the water. A day to be celebrated for ages...something that is a big frakking deal. Friday, for us, was such a day. Because Friday, as you are all so very aware, was the day the Battlestar Galactica exhibit opened at the EMP|SFM. And oh my Gods were we there.
Can we just go ahead and admit that we are hardcore BSG fans who may or may not have handles on the forums? It's not even like we are major science fiction geeks, the show is just that good. The reimagined series, based on the 1978 original, has been wildly successful. So popular in fact, as to warrant its own rollercoaster in Singapore! Following a fleet of the last humans in the galaxy as they search for a home after the 12 Colonies are destroyed by Cylons, it confronts some of the biggest questions of our time. If you haven't seen it, do.
And if you have, or even if you haven't yet, then you really need to spool up your FTL drives and fire up the Viper because the Battlestar Galactica exhibit at the EMP|SFM is better than finally finding Earth. Not only are there actual Vipers from the show, but they also have Raiders who come red glowing eyes periodically scan the space. There are costumes from the original and remained series, including that killer red dress of everyone's favorite Cylonbait, the Six. The interactive elements include mini-documentaries and a choose your own moral adventure based on the social issues and themes of the show. The coolest thing of all is the Cylon detector. It's your chance to finally know your true nature, and to find out if the people close to you are secretly skinjobs.
The premiere was out of sight and our bucket list is one item lighter, because we totes hugged Admiral Adama. No big deal. Played by Edward James Olmos, the Admiral is the demigod of the fleet and a fearless and noble leader. Also a totally cool guy who was nonplussed by our suave yet obvious excitement at giving him a squeeze. Everything about the BSG opening was the best thing ever and you'd do yourself a favor to check it out. So say we all!
