Guillermo del Toro. In town. TONIGHT.
When we saw this come across the ticker it was more like, Guillermo del Tor-Whoa! The famous Mexican director and auteur of some of our favorite films is coming to town? Hot tamales, we are so there. And it is TONIGHT!
Guillermo is our kind of director. His films are always wickedly dark, fantastic and with a serious undercurrent of evil, usually feature creepy orphans and war and draw on science fiction and horror. Take Devil’s Backbone, the ghostly murder nightmare set against the Spanish Civil war. It’s amazing. Freaking Blade II? Vampire hunters and assassins and implanted mind bombs? What’s not to like? And of course there is the Hell Boy series, but we haven’t seen that so can’t really vouch. Pan’s Labyrinth, however, we have seen a bazillion times because it is one of the most beautifully done explorations of trust, fear, facism and labyrinths of all time. And the three Academy Awards plus a BAFTA it picked up aren’t too shabby either.
But that’s not what brings the man to town tonight. This evening he is talking about his film career but also his new book, the second installment in his trilogy (first up was the bestseller The Strain). The second installment, The Fall is all about vampires, a subject the man knows a thing or two about, and it’s going to be amazing. It’s moderated by local film celebrity Warren Ethridge and is going down tonight at the Experience Music Project JBL Room. Word on the streets is that there are still a few tickets left so gobble them up people. It’s Guillermo del Toro Time!!
7 p.m. // JBL Theater at EMP 325 5th Ave N //$30 ticket includes signed copy of the novel
