Download New Leaked Deerhunter Album--It's Megadope

As if we needed one more reason to be excited about Deerhunter's return to Seattle next month, (accompanied by the Internet's latest band crush, the fuzzed out, dreamy, psych-pop Real Estate) we were recently fortunate enough to get our greedy clutches on their upcoming release, Halcyon Digest, before it hits your favorite local record store on September 28.

Not to sound dramatic or anything, but we've been waiting for a full album for almost three years, and are relieved to report that the 11-track record (in most part recorded in their hometown of Atlanta, Georgia) does not disappoint. The songs remain bleary and shadowed as they chronicle loneliness, isolation, and boredom the way Deerhunter does best, while dripping with layers and haziness that makes their sound so distinctive. Hands down, our favorite track thus far is the album closer, the nearly 8-minute "He Would Have Laughed" that is supposedly about the death of singer Jay Reatard earlier this year.

Deerhunter sneakily announced their new release by dappling in some of their newest tracks on their most recent tour earlier this summer with Spoon, before launching a brand new website mid June. To make the website even more exciting, fans are encouraged to print out the DIY flyer that is up for download on their site, paste it anywhere, and send a picture. The result is an impressive community of photographs from all over the world. Bradford Cox explained the idea behind the posters: “ I remember being fascinated with the ephemera of 70’s - 80’s artrock in record stores like Wuxtry in Athens where I hung out as a kid or Wax ‘N Facts in Atlanta. You’d see a photocopied faded B-52’s flyer next to a poster for Lou Reed or XTC. It was like an artpunk scrapbook on those walls. It made my head spin."

Wary of illegal downloading? Fear not! The folks at NPR have kindly hosted the entire album up for streaming. Don't forget to get your hands on a tangible record next Tuesday, or the chance to hear it all live on October 27 at the Showbox.
