Whoopie Pie You're so Fly

We are a nation involved in a bitter war, and it’s happening right under our noses. No, I’m not talking about the Middle East, or the Gulf Coast or the pedantic musings of 24-hour cable news networks. I am discussing a secret war going down in our kitchens and on our taste buds. The battle for the most popular, most delicious and most desired sweet treat. We’ll call it the Operation Dessert Storm.

Cupcakes have ruled this nation for far too long, and it’s time for an insurgence. Thomas Jefferson said we needed a revolution every 20 years, but this is the modern era, so things get a max of like, 5 minutes before we are so over it. Cupcakes have had their time to shine for two long and we would like to introduce you to this season’s vanguard upstart, the Whoopie Pie. Imagine you take two pieces of a really spongy cookie or a rather firm cake and then shove a bunch of icing in-between it and make a chocolate and frosting cookie cake sandwich, that’s a Whoopie Pie. You heard right. Cake cookie sandwich.

Profiled by none other than the New York Times as the dessert du jour, on Wednesday July 21 starting at 11:00 a.m. the Oddfellows Café is hosting a Whoopie Pie riot act. And by riot act, we of course mean Bake Off. And you want to know the best part? They want your participation. All you have to do is show up hungry. Bakers will have prepared submissions for the contest including classic and variations on the recipe. Awards will be given out including Best Classic Whoopie Pie, Most Interesting take on a Whoopie Pie, Whoopie Pie Champion and this is where you come in, Crowd Favorite!

We’re pretty convinced that Whoopie Pies are the next big thing and if you want to be trendy and also sugar buzzing, you are going to want to check out the deliciousness. Just leave your diabetic friends at home. We don’t want this war to have too many casualties.
