Michael Arrington: Getting up in Seattle's Tech Grill
This week we learned Tech Crunch's outspoken, oft disliked blogging mastermind Michael Arrington has moved to Seattle - about 3 months after openly stating that Seattle pales in comparison to Silicon Valley in tech relevance. "If you don’t think you have what it takes to make it in Silicon Valley, maybe Seattle or other mini-tech hubs is the place for you." He proceeds to explain that Seattle is great ...we've got nature and culture and a wonderful lifestyle! But that those are selling points for pansies, people that don't have what it takes to commit 110% of their life to grinding at innovation. So sure, it's not shocking that we haven't exactly welcomed him with open arms.
He appears a little tickled at the "ugh" reaction of locals to his migration; presumably he thinks we're annoyed with his poking fun of our validity. "If you are not controversial, it is hard to get people fired up and interested in what you are writing about. Seattle is great. There is definitely a lifestyle issue up here, and people love living up here.... It is fun. It is fun to create rivalries and exploit them." He seems to be discounting the fact that maybe we've long ago dismissed his relevance. Sure, TechCrunch is "influential"...your startup gets some traffic bumps after a mention, you might get on more people's radar. But it's not make or break, and the majority of tech or startup employees we know roll their eyes at its mention. You're welcome to move to our lovely, luscious land Michael...we're too busy doing work to really get our panties in a twist over your self righteous entrance. Well, except maybe TechFlash local blogger John Cook...he's probably pooping his pants.
Now, can someone please explain to us why he uses a picture of Hogwarts in his posts about Seattle?
