Mixer Connects Non-profits with Tech Volunteers
33 people gathered at Tap House Grill in Bellevue last night for Seattle Net Tuesday’s Tech Volunteer & Non-profit Mixer. The crowd included a variety of local computer programmers, testers and IT support specialists. Software tester and first time attendee Paul Wirsing came out because he was “curious and wanted to see what opportunities are available to help.” Representatives from non-profits like Olive Crest, KITH and Girls in Tech were also present to share their needs with these tech savvy volunteers.
Hosted by Sean DeButts, Brian Glanz and Sameer Siruguri, the event supported Seattle Net’s mission to “bring together people who want to use technology in the cause of social change.” DeButts has always had an interest in helping non-profits and feels his involvement with Seattle Net helps “fulfill my part of the social media etiquette. To be generous, share and help your community.”
The highlight of the mixer was an excellent presentation by Twibes creator, Adam Loving. Wearing a nametag that read “Twitter Guy” Loving gave an excellent primer on the many ways non-profits can use Twitter for personal growth. From driving traffic to earning more followers, he shared noteworthy tips like reminding Tweeters to “actively seek out and interact with people both publicly and directly.” Kudzi Mudimu, Executive Director for Global Music Project also presented, sharing the many ways their organization has grown through the use of social media sites like Facebook.
