The Paramount Prepares to Premiere Dreamgirls
Drama, intrigue and some freaking fabulous singing is set to hit the Paramount next week when the National Tour of Dreamgirls makes its Seattle premiere on Tuesday. A revival of the original Tony-Award winning Broadway musical, Dreamgirls premiered at Harlem’s Apollo Theater in November 2009 before setting out on tour. Musical theater fans (and BeyoncĂ© and Jennifer Hudson fans) are likely familiar with the story: an all-female musical group performing in 1960’s Chicago is discovered by ambitious agent Curtis Taylor, Jr. and quickly ascend to fame, while tensions between the members escalate. Loosely based on the story of Motown and The Supremes, Dreamgirls is set to wake up sleepy Seattleites with its powerful music and a pissed-off Effie White.
Dreamgirls stars Moya Angela as Effie White and (as The Dreams) Syesha Mercado as Deena Jones, Adrienne Warren as Lorrell Robinson, and Margaret Hoffman as Michelle Morris.
For inspiration on this dreary Friday afternoon, watch this video of Jennifer Holliday - the original Effie - howl the house down with “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going”.
April 6 - 11 // The Paramount Theater, 911 Pine St. // $27-70
