Can't Miss It: Thursday

Paradise_Lost.jpg LOVIN HADESTOWN: Someone once said you can tell a person by the company she keeps. If that were true, we wouldn’t have to hear a note of Anais Mitchell’s music before we decided we liked her. Mitchell’s new album, the music from her folk opera Hadestown, stars Bon Iver, Ani DiFranco, The Haden triplets, and The Low Anthem’s Ben Knox Miller -- a convincing list of guests. Of course kept company counts for only so much, and we sort of have more of a thing for Mitchell’s stellar songwriting style, at times delicate, often strong, and always soulful. She based Hadestown on the story of Orpheus and Eurydice and created a fresh, folksy take on the Greek classic. Mitchell’s a gem, but if you needed more convincing, the excellent Jeffrey Foucalt is on the bill as well.

LONG CON: ComiCon, Sakura-Con, SteamCon, BurlyCon: with all these conventions hosted in Seattle, our town could probably host a ConCon (that’s the mother of all Cons) and get away with it. Here’s another one for the fun-pile: Norwescon. The Northwest’s premiere sci-fi and fantasy convention celebrates its 33rd year in Seattle. This year’s guests of honor are Hugo Award winner Vernor Vinge, artist John Jude Palencar, Author and Boing Boing contributor Cory Doctorow, and UW Physics professor Dr. John G. Cramer. As always, Norwescon is the host convention for the Philip K. Dick Award. A word of advice, the program for this convention is PACKED. Plan ahead before you go.

GET LOW: In Heaven, choreographer Morgan Thorson joins forces with musicians Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker of the band Low. Live music teams with dance in this presentation, which has dancers in solo, duet and “choral arrangement.” All wear angelic white and move together in acts of spiritual delight. Heaven is a very new thing, actually, having premiered last October in Houston. This presentation is the west coast premiere.

Here, a taste of Heaven:
