Weekend Madness! R.I.P. New Mexico, NCAA Brackets Everywhere
Weekend One of March Madness is over, and already our bracket is gone, murdered by a fusillade of upsets. But we don’t care! The Huskies are on their way to Syracuse, NY and the Sweet 16, having barreled Prius-style through the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday, 82-64.
Clearly punch-drunk after the game, New Mexico’s star player Darington Hobson said of the Huskies, “They're not even that good. They just played a good game tonight.”
Okay thanks for playing, Daryl. Or Dave was it? We’ve already forgotten who you are, and so has America!
Now in the Dawgs’ crosshairs - the West Virginia Mountaineers. And as seen in this hotel room footage, the Huskies’ next opponent may be just as dense as their last one. Not that you aren’t already rooting for UW, but don't those videos make you want West Virginia to lose even more?
Off-the-court shenanigans aside, the Mountaineers promise to be a bit more of a challenge to the Huskies, and even some Husky fans might admit moving WV through in their own brackets. The Mountaineers finished second in the Big East, and won that conference’s tournament.
Yes, one could argue that - with the demise of Villanova, Marquette, Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame and Louisville - the Big East can’t play basketball. But West Virginia faced a solid challenge Sunday from Missouri, and still nearly won by double digits.
Regardless, if we’ve learned anything over this first tourney weekend, it’s that anything is possible. Just ask Northern Iowa, who took out overall #1 seed Kansas, a team everyone including the president thought would win it all. No one saw that coming. And if you did, well congratulations, and we hope you stop smoking crack soon.
UW Huskies vs. WVU Mountaineers - Thursday, 3/25, Tip-off 4:27 p.m. PT, KIRO-TV
-In other news, an MLS strike was averted when everyone met in Washington, D.C. this weekend and came to their goddamn senses.
Sounders FC kickoff the 2010 MLS season as planned Thursday at Qwest Field, against the expansion Philadelphia Union, about the same time the UW game will be ending. So it’ll either be the perfect way to continue a Seattle sports high, or cope with having just lost to a bunch of singing, pillow-fighting hillbillies.
