You Live By The Sword, You Die By The Sword

By their nature, team sports competitions aren't won or lost by an individual. There are too many players involved and too many variables to consider. The Colts got to the Super Bowl and lost the Super Bowl largely because of Peyton Manning but an injured Dwight Freeney may have made all the difference. Freeney got to Brees once, but he clearly wasn't himself. It was nevertheless a close match and the city of New Orleans deservedly has something to celebrate. It seems that the Big Easy will be starting Mardi Gras a week early this year. Forty-four seems to be the magic number as both the Saints and the Super Bowl have been in existence for forty-four years and they're finally connected. We imagine there are at least a few fans with conflicting emotions as Manning was raised and played high school ball in New Orleans, not mention the fact that his father played most of his career for the Saints. Though we're sure that they've already gotten over it and the party's raging on Bourbon Street. Congratulations to the Saints and the city of New Orleans.

I wouldn't put too much stock in 44 being magic. After all, since the link the Saints and Super Bowl would be the same age in ANY year the Saints won -- and 7 or 8 might have been a little more "magic." But I was very pleased to see the Saints finally win one, esp. for the great American city of New Orleans.
