Can't Miss It: Thursday

uke1.jpg PECHA KUCHA, BABY: Presenters are given six minutes and forty seconds to display and discuss twenty images (twenty seconds each), sharing works and ideas on a host of subjects, mediums, experiences, practices, and more. This volume’s title is "What Was Old Is Now New." Expect the eleven presenters to make motifs of recycling and reinvention. Pecha Kucha, a sort of short but sweet, everyman's TED series of varying presentations, is free and all are welcome to become future presenters. Started by architects Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham in Tokyo in 2003, the inspirational and enlightening series now has homes in over 250 cities worldwide. Tonight’s presentation will be an intimate affair at Ouch My Eye. Though it doesn’t always occur on the first Thursday of the month, this one happens to be occurring on First Avenue tonight, making it a great stop for art walkers.

HEY, THAT’S MY LYMBYC SYSTYM: One of the best bands to come out of Arizona since Tempe was considered by music reps to be the next Seattle (sorry Jimmy Eat World), the post-rock instrumentalist duo--now stationed in Brooklyn--brings to mind groups like The Album Leaf and American Analog Set with slow tempos, low-key electronics, and a dose of pretty lethargy. They’re a great group to see during the placid, urban winter, and the High Dive should serve their sound well. The brain’s limbic system is responsible for emotion. Lymbyc Systym shoot for the same. The band is also performing live at KEXP today at noon.

9:00 p.m. // High Dive // $10

WINTER VACATION: Honolulu's Taimane Gardner has taken the traditional ukulele away from Hawaii and into new territory. The young prodigious performer covers musical ground from Don Ho to Pink Floyd, European folksy flamenco to Carlos Santana, and she's happy to hit a blue note here and there. A true virtuoso, she plays with local uke-master Del Ray free today at City Hall and tonight at Gordon Biersch. Her performances kick off a string of Hawaiian music concerts presented by the Hawaiian Visitors and Convention Bureau, including other popular entertainers performing at The Triple Door.

12:00 p.m.; 5:30 p.m. // City Hall, 600 4th Ave; Gordon Biersch, 600 Pine St. // Free
