An Interview with Kindra Meyer, Creator of an Ah-MAZE-Ing New Year's Eve Masquerade Ball & Benefit

There are two times each year when society embraces those who dress up in extravagantly excessive and audaciously absurd attire with open, loving arms: Halloween and New Year's Eve. As The World Falls Down: A Labyrinth Masquerade Ball & New Year's Eve Party is where hundreds of Seattle fashionables, entertainers, and party people—bound by a common affinity for David Bowie’s gloriously protruding ball sac, puppets, talking dungeon heads, gogo firebirds, spectacularly magical costumes from Seattle's secret superstar of style, art, miniskirts, and mayhem—will unite for an evening of celebration and delicious debauchery. Kindra Meyer, the lovely Queen Clam known to sprinkle trails of glitter on the runway to the main stages of Seattle, and the Adventure School (creators of the NYE extravaganza) graciously shared some event details.

What inspired you create a NYE blowout based on Labyrinth?

The movie itself. Ever since I was little, I've been fascinated by this movie. The trifecta of Bowie, Henson, and Lucas is simply magic. NYE is a perfect match considering the movie is all about time, though the countdown is till the 13th hour instead of the 12th :) We chose to throw the party to benefit Lifelong AIDS Alliance, a group we are all huge supporters of.

Lots of pretty big local entertainers like DJ Riff Raff and Fuchia Foxxx will be in attendance. Can you give us any scoop on what to expect? Any teasers you can share?

What to expect...wow....dance magic, halls of hands....baby Toby like you've never seen, a bog of eternal sexiness...beauty, art, macabre, and madness. And an open bar with 4 absinthe fountains to put you in the "magic mood." Also, here is a little "visual tease"!

What should people wear to this event? Are attendees encouraged to gear up in Labyrinth-inspired costumes?

Absolutely! Labyrinth costumes are encouraged, as well as masquerade ball. There will be a costume contest and the winner will receive a "Babe with the Power" gift bag from Babeland.

Do you design/create your own costumes? Any tips on where to go for do-it-yourself costume creations?

I am lucky enough to have my best friend, Jamie Von Stratton, make nearly all of my costumes. She and I will be wearing space/maze-themed matching dresses that night. She is AMAZING. Tips on DIY are everywhere: thrift stores, garbage cans, Home Depot, bubble wrap. You name it, someone I know has made a garment out of it.

Where do you like to shop when you're not planning awesome NYE extravaganzas?

I mostly wear clothes from the thrift store and things Jamie makes, but otherwise the Pretty Parlor is my favorite local shop!

Thanks, Kindra! Anything else that we should know about the Labyrinth New Year's Eve party?
