McGinn: Legalize It

Friday, McGinn said he supports the legalization of marijuana in Washington State:

"We recognize that, you know, like alcohol, it's something that should be regulated, not treated as a criminal activity. And I think that's where the citizens of Seattle want us to go."

For bonus points, imagine McGinn saying that in a super-stoned laconic surfer voice.

The Mayor-elect has been soliciting ideas for his administration on Ideas for Seattle. "Legalize marijuana and tax it" is the second most popular idea after "Expand as much light rail and subway as possible."

In 2003, city voters approved a measure making enforcing weed laws the lowest priority for Seattle police. And Rep. Mary Lou Dickerson (Dem, Seattle), has introduced a bill that would treat pot like alcohol, allowing it to be sold to people 21 and older and treating crimes committed while under its influence similarly to crimes committed while drunk. Pot would be sold in state liquor stores and the tax revenue from its sales would be used to fund substance abuse prevention programs.

Some folks can't get past McGinn's beard. They'll be the big hurdle. Mark our words: people who will hate on bearded elected officials will also hate on legalizing marijuana.
