Weekend Sports Roundup: Seahawks Make the Case for Going to Church

If you were too hungover from an office holiday party to catch any sports this weekend, consider yourself lucky. Sure, you might’ve been poised headfirst over the commode, regretting the previous night’s Merlot-fueled karaoke rendition of Meredith Brooks’ "Bitch." Or worse, you were trying to get Rachel from HR out of your shirt and your apartment because, no, you don’t want to grab some brunch, but yes, you’d like to keep your job.

Either way, the additional pain of witnessing the Seahawks get pummeled by the Houston Texans 34-7 would’ve driven your already sorry mental and physical state into unknowable depths.

The Hawks were up Sh*t Creek from Play One, a 64-yard TD bomb by Houston QB Matt Schaub. The Texans had lost four straight games before Sunday, but amassed a 24-0 lead before John Carlson snagged the Hawks’ only touchdown just before halftime. Houston piled on 10 more points in the third quarter before finally stopping the beating because, to continue the metaphor, the horse was pretty much dead.

After being executed Texas-style, head coach Jim Mora said he was "as discouraged now as I’ve been in any game of my career."

Mora also said, "We’re gonna find out about people. We’re gonna find out who deserves to be part of the process going forward," which is ironic from a guy whose most recent attempt to fix the team involved playing fashion police. Uh, Jim, we’ve got news for you--it’s not the jerseys.

We can only guess that deep down Mora is distracted, simultaneously dumbfounded about how exactly things went so wrong this season, and quietly contemplating where he’s going to work next season, if and when his reckoning should come (it probably should).

Next Sunday, the Seahawks go head-to-head against the 1-12 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We’re not telling you to skip watching the game, but if you haven’t been to church in a while, you should go. You won’t be missing much and c’mon, it’s almost God’s birthday.

Also this weekend…

We were a little disappointed, though definitely not as much, in our Huskies. Up against a bigger, more physical Georgetown team, they lost Saturday 74-66 in the John Wooden Classic, named after the UCLA coaching legend.

The 99-year-old Wooden was on hand to watch a close first half, then a second half in which the Dawgs got sloppy and fell behind by as many as 20 points for a long stretch. Possibly fearing the blowout may literally bore Wooden to death, the Huskies decided to try and make a game of it, pulling to within single digits before time expired (on the game, and the coach).

UW is barely hanging in at #24 in the latest AP rankings, their two losses coming in their only road games. Thankfully the Huskies won’t be leaving the confines of Hec-Ed again until January 8.

Indeed, there's no place like home for the holidays.
