Happy Birthday to Social Documentarian Milton Rogovin!

miltonrogovin.jpg

The Henry is commemorating the work of social documentarian Milton Rogovin with a selection of his black and white photographs. Rogovin, who turns 100 on December 30, is an heir to the legacy of social documentary photographers like Lewis Hine and Jacob Riis, who--armed with a camera and driven by conscience--worked to document the lives of people whom much of society had ignored or taken for granted. Rogovin's series on Appalachian miners, taken from 1962-1987, are particularly impressive.

Rogovin was also diligent in following up with his subjects--his "Forgotten Ones" series documents a thirty-year span in the lives of several families in Buffalo, New York. The Library of Congress houses over a thousand of Rogovin's prints. From now until
March 28, 2010, you can see a selection of them in person.

And Cora Edmonds, another photographer with an eye for the less fortunate, will be showing selected work from her photography of Nepal from Dec. 15 through Jan. 26 at Swirl Wine Bar. Swirl is hosting an artist reception for Cora Edmonds on December 17 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Edmonds is probably best known for Namaste, a photograph of a young boy giving the traditional Nepalese greeting taken in 2000. On a return trip to Nepal, Edmonds found her subject in an impoverished village, an experience that led to her founding the Namaste Children’s Fund, a Seattle non-profit group that works to educate women and children in Nepal. She's also the founder of ArtXchange Gallery, a Pioneer Square gallery showcasing a wide variety of international work.
