Weekend Sports Roundup: It Came From Eugene

The legions of Oregon fans have left, which means the largest concentration of duck sludge on the UW campus is once again at the bottom of Drumheller Fountain. The low-tide smell, however, still lingers over Husky Stadium long after Saturday’s 43-19 shredding by the Ducks.

As a die-hard Husky fan, each loss to our sub-Columbia rival, six in a row now, is a hard death.

For starters, we have to endure another year of hearing Duck nation spew about how they’re God’s gift to college football. When they’re not doing that, presumably they’re making out with mirrors or enjoying the smell of their own farts. Hell, even a columnist for The Oregonian did a Top 10 list of why Duck fans suck. (We can only imagine how bad our hubris would have to be for Steve Kelley or Art Thiel to ever turn on us.)

But we digress. The more troubling aspect of this weekend’s loss is that the Huskies should be getting better with each game. Clearly that’s not the case. The glorious win over USC (which feels like forever ago now) supposedly ushered in Huskies Nouveau. But the results have been turbulent since then, and Saturday’s bottom line wasn’t much different than the 44-10 loss to Oregon last year. Special teams were off, the defense couldn’t keep up, Coach Sark pulled Jake Locker before the end of the game.

Now, following in the Seahawks' footsteps, the Huskies will take a merciful post-trampling bye week to contemplate their existence. If they want a bowl berth, whoever took the field against Trojans: please show up.

We’re not being fair-weather. Just fair.

Speaking of the post-season, the Sounders’ playoff Polaroid came into focus on Sunday, and it is orange. As in, Houston Dynamo orange.

Sounders FC topped off the regular season Saturday with a 2-1 come from behind win over FC Dallas before a record crowd. Houston’s win the next day set the playoff matchup.

Seattle goes in as the West’s #3 seed, Houston the #2. First match of the two-game aggregate series is Thursday night at Qwest Field, and tickets sold out 30 minutes after going on sale Saturday.

Three positives as the playoffs start: solid play from the best Swedish import since fish, Sounders midfielder/blogger Freddie Ljungberg, who set up both goals Saturday. Second, Thursday’s match will be the fourth in 12 days for the Dynamo, so here’s hoping they’re tired. Third, this season the Sounders beat Houston twice in Seattle, and played them to a draw in a rough road environment.

Finally, the bonus in all this: the dulcet tones of Kevin Calabro in the playoffs again. Can we please let the man call a Seattle championship? Please?!
