Weekend Sports Roundup: My, Oh My!

To be a Seattle sports fan this weekend was to rediscover that we indeed had a functioning heart.

In rapid succession, Seattlest’s heart stopped, sputtered, started, then stopped again as the Huskies tried, and tried, and trriiied, but ultimately failed to beat Notre Dame in a devastating 37-30 overtime defeat.

Within the hour, Sounders forward Roger Levesque shocked us back to life with a shot into the Columbus Crew net, earning a clutch 1-0 victory. The win snapped the Crew’s 24-game home unbeaten streak, and puts the Sounders in firm control of their playoff destiny with two games left in the season.

Sunday, our heart dropped like a shot put to the bottom of our stomach, as we watched the Indianapolis Colts dismantle and undress the Seahawks, 34-17.

And a few hours later, as the Mariners celebrated a 4-3 season-ending win over Texas, we felt our heart rise into our throat as the team carried its greatest player of all-time, Ken Griffey Jr. off the field after what might’ve been his final game. The man who saved Seattle Baseball back in 1995 just may have done it again.

This Saturday and Sunday in Seattle sports history provided all the arrhythmia a heart could possibly handle. We saw determination and fight, disappointment and embarrassment. We reminisced about what once was, and imagined what yet could be.

Not too bad for a fall weekend in 2009. Can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings.
