GAMES (AND THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE/PLAY THEM): If you're a gamer, then you've already planned to spend your entire weekend around the convention center for the Penny Arcade Expo. What better way to spend the last days of summer than indoors playing the latest and upcoming games, talking to developers and hearing gamer-friendly music? It's officially sold out, but it never hurts to try. If that doesn't work, there's always PAX East in March. Convention Center, Friday-Sunday.
CROWDS (WITH FUNNEL CAKE): In case the onslaught of coverage hasn't been enough to beat it into your head, this weekend is also Bumbershoot, featuring music, comedy, Flatstock, fair food, and a grand swath of humanity. Musical headliners include Modest Mouse, Franz Ferdinand, Katy Perry, De La Soul, Vivian Girls, Raphael Saadiq, Mayer Hawthorne, and Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears. Seattle Center, Saturday-Monday.
ECCENTRIC MUSIC: Many of the people attending tonight's Daniel Johnston show are going to be hoping for some sort of wackiness, as the Texas-associated songsmith is known as much for his mental health issues as his music. Hopefully they won't be disapointed if the beautifully sincere music has to suffice. At Neumos, Friday 9/4, 8pm doors, $18 adv, 21+.
PUPPETS: We're entering the last week of the Frye's group exhibition The Puppet Show, which closes out on the 13th. These are puppets placed in an art context, so it's a chance to expand your thoughts on the slightly-creepy form. Parents, be warned that there is mature content. Frye, FREE, all ages.
GOOD PARENTING: Early reviews of ultra-dark comedy World's Greatest Dad have focused on two aspects: Robin Williams not sucking in his portrayal of a failed writer who gets presented with an ultimate opportunity after his son's demise and Bobcat Goldthwait's deftly handled story . Now we get to see the film for ourselves. Harvard Exit, various times.
