Reminding Local Media to do Their Job

Seattle Prop 8 Protest (Jack Hollenbach)
Stranger writer Dominic Holden does not suggest, but demands today that the local media do their jobs--you know, like, actual journalism--by reporting not only on Referendum 71 by way of deconstructing its meaning, but also by reporting on its creators, pushers, and the true interests behind its hateful and hypocritical beginnings.

It is a fascinating and cringe-inducing reminder of how this all got started and we agree completely with Holden--that it is an important and relevant part of the story.

Seattlest would also like to remind you that if you are in support of the (almost) equal rights provided under the "Everything But Marriage" law, then you should APPROVE Referendum 71. Local media have not been very clear about that from what we've seen.

Dominic Holden lecturing anyone on journalism is akin to Mark Sanford holding court on the sanctity of marriage.

Good on Dominic for holding this out there. The mainstream journalism in this city is seriously lacking and on important issues such as this it is crucial. It is not only wrong of the majority to vote on the rights of the minority but it is unconstitutional. This intentionally confusing Referendum may cause seemingly well intentioned knoweledgable individuals to align their votes with those who enjoy spreading hate and ignorance. We must and we will defeat them.

@1: I have to disagree with you, on the grounds that there are different standards placed on different individuals and different press organizations based on what image those individuals and organizations put out there.

Holden writes for The Stranger, a free weekly "alternative" paper and as such, his voice and style will likely be more direct and colorful.

Organizations like the Seattle Times, King5, Komo4, Kiro7, etc. present themselves to the public as THE source distinguished reporting.

It's like comparing Jon Stewart with CNN. Stewart presents himself and his show for what it is while stations like CNN, MSNBC, etc. present themselves as journalists. Therefore, they should expect to have their feet held to a brighter flame.

I'm not debating the merits of "alternative" newspapers. I'm speaking specifically about Holden, who is a disingenous hack.

Make that "disingenuous."

Hear, hear! Said Dominic is the son of the esteemed former exec editor of Seattle Weekly and former exec news producer for KING TV, none other than Seattlest contributor moi-mème. I see that some of his Stranger trolls have followed him to our calmer columns, but they cannot restrain themselves from casting aspersions on Dominic's by-the-bootstraps education and professional achievements. They have no shame.
