Welcome to Seattle, Edgerrin James! The likely Hall-of-Famer is a Seahawk, signed to provide depth at the running back position that's been a morass of underacheivement since Shaun Alexander's 2006 collapse.
Adding a Hall-of-Fame running back sounds exciting, but then Frank Gifford is a Hall-of-Fame running back, and adding him wouldn't help the team much (though it might attract more ladies of a certain age).
Still, Edgerrin James, a.k.a. "The Edge," has more career rushing yards than any active NFL running back, and he's practicing with the team today. We're going to suspend our natural skepticism for a paragraph or two and just enjoy. The former Colt and Cardinal will wear #32, Ricky Watters' old number, and is practicing with the first unit for the time being, as presumed starter Julius Jones sits with a thigh bruise.
We'll hear from coach Jim Mora later today about how the Hawks plan to use James, but Seahawks Addicts has already weighed in with a thoughtful analysis of the move.
Our own knee-jerk reaction is that James won't make much of an impact. While aging quarterbacks often recapture success with a new team, aging running backs rarely experience such a rejuvenation. Marcus Allen had some decent years with the Chiefs after leaving L.A., but...Eric Dickerson with the '92 Raiders? Thurman Thomas with the '00 Dolphins? Franco Harris with the '84 Seahawks? These are not happy memories.
Today, though, the season hasn't started, and everyone's a potential 1,000-yard rusher. Welcome, "Edge," and best of luck in your Qwest Field endeavors. James will presumably make his blue and silver debut on Saturday night, when the Seahawks play an exhibition game in Kansas City.

Tuesdays are Muppet Days
