Welp, Time to Get New Sigg Bottles

In the hubbub last year over the potential teratogenic and hormone-disrupting effects of bisphenol A, everyone tossed their old Nalgene in favor of a new one made from bio-based plastic, a Klean Kanteen, or a Sigg bottle. In particular, the demands for Sigg were so high that the hundred-year-old Swiss company had to shut down production for a few months while they retooled their factory to keep up with the new demand. Well, now it's time to toss those Siggs, as the company has recently announced that the lining of any bottles made prior to August 2008 contained BPA after all. Mmmm, taste the delicious decreased testosterone levels. Figure out if you've been poisoning yourself here.

Ha! Well the jackass who stole mine from work got more than they bargained for. Who takes water bottles? That seems kind of gross.

It's hard to tell but their website info implies that SIGG knew all along that the bottle liners contained trace amounts of BPA. They say their tests showed no leaching, but they were afraid anyway and apparently started in 2006 to develop a BPA-free lining which they implemented 2 years later.

They must have shut down production in May or June because I had intended to get one and then sudddenly couldn't because they weren't selling them anymore. I ended up getting on from REI in June with I gift card I had gotten as a birthday gift.

I can't find the exact dates, but it was definitely closed last summer, and the timing is right enough for me to wonder the same thing.

Do you know when they shut down production as mentioned above? Month/year? I'm wondering now if this is when they were actually retooling their factory for BPA-free production.
