Your USA/Mexico Fútbol Viewing Options
USA plays Mexico in a World Cup qualifier today which is a big deal. (No, really, it is. Don't make us sent Teabaggers to your house). The game will only be shown in the U.S. on the Telemundo network, for very boring reasons.
Thus you will probably want to head to a bar to catch the action, which begins at 1 p.m. our time. Or, if you are chained to your desk, catch it after work on replay: A few dedicated local bars are showing the game on delay (though, for god's sake, stay off the interwebs before then).
A little background: Team USA will be playing at altitude (7,349 feet, or about halfway up Mt. Rainier), in front of 100,000 fans, who have an affinity for throwing things (including bags of urine, some say) at opposing players. In short, it's an intimidating atmosphere, which is part of the reason why in 72 years of traveling to Mexico, the best USA soccer has managed is a draw. (Current Sounders FC technical director Chris Henderson was on that team, he tells the Times' Jose Romero about the experience here.)
Should you wish to watch this game with other soccer fans, a few suggestions:
Fado (Downtown/Pioneer Sq.)--Will show the game live at 1 p.m. and replay it at 5:30 p.m.
George & Dragon (Fremont)--Live at 1 p.m., replay at 8 p.m.
Atlantic Crossing (Roosevelt)--Game-watching party with Sounders' supporters group Emerald City Supporters, replay only at 6:30 p.m.
Alternately, for a local perspective on the big game, you could follow the action through Times' soccer writer Jose Romero's live game thread on his Sounders FC Blog.
