The Ten Best Yankees/M's Games in Seattle, Part I

marzano_o'neill.jpg The Mariners and Yankees have played some outstanding games here over the years; below we present part one of our top ten. Historic, surprising, violent, record-breaking--the list has it all. We're giving you #6-10 today, with the top five coming tomorrow. (Although if you're a Mariner fan past your teens, you already know what #1 is).

10) Morrow Nearly No-No's Yanks, 2008
Brandon Morrow dominated the potent Yankee lineup in his first major league start, crushing the Bronx Bombers' slim postseason hopes. The win pushed the Yanks 8.5 games back of wild card leader Boston. Morrow outdueled 200-game winner Andy Pettitte, carrying a no-hitter two outs into the eighth inning before Wilson Betemit's double broke it up. [P-I game story] [box]

9) The Big Unit vs. King Felix, 2005
19-year-old Felix Hernandez' sixth career start came against the greatest Mariner pitcher of all. Randy Johnson beat Hernandez on this night, shutting out the Mariners for seven innings. But Felix showed signs of his promise, striking out seven and allowing just four hits in front of the second-largest home crowd of the season--a crowd that included his father, Felix Sr., who was watching Junior pitch in the majors for the first time. 8) Swift's Near No-No, 1986
Second-year starter Bill Swift was just four outs away from the Mariner franchise's first no-hitter, but eighth-inning Wayne Tolleson single broke up the no-no. Swift settled for a two-hitter over 8 2/3 IP, with Matt Young coming in in relief to get the final out. Tommy John pitched almost as well, but a Jim Presley eighth-inning single drove in Johnny Moses to get Swift a well-deserved win. [NY Times article] [box]

7) Brawl For the Ages, 1996
Tim Davis' eighth-inning brushback of the Yanks' Paul O'Neill set off a 17-minute bench-clearing brawl--beginning with a fistfight at home plate between O'Neill and M's catcher John Marzano. Five players, including O'Neill and Marzano, were ejected. The M's won 10-2, completing a series sweep of the Yankees on Lou Piniella's 53rd birthday. [P-I game story], [box]

6) Mariners Pre-empt SportsCenter With 16-Inning Classic, 1991
A national ESPN Sunday Night Baseball audience saw the longest game in Kingdome history, won by the M's Greg Briley with a down-to-his-last-strike walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the 16th. The M's staged comebacks in both the 12th and 16th innings to pull this one out--a game we remember best, though, for Mariner third-string catcher Matt Sinatro getting thrown out at home on a single in the bottom of the 14th. Wow, I can hardly wait to see what number 1 is... You don't even need a spoiler alert for that baby.

Of course, I am proud (and truthful) to say I was there for number 1, absolutely the most thrilling sports event I've ever been to.

The Morrow game is pretty darn high on my list, I think his weakness this year must have diminished its luster.
