JOHN WATERS FANS : Central Cinema is showing one of our favorite '80s movies, Cry-Baby, and there's never a bad excuse to watch this film. Especially right now, in an air-conditioned theatre with stone oven pizza, and beer to wash it down. Ricki Lake? Hatchet Face? That single slow-moving tear drop? It doesn't get much better than that.
7, 9:30 p.m. // Central Cinema, 1411 21st Ave // Tickets: $6
RELATIONSHIP DESTRUCTION: Kevin Canty will be reading from his latest collection of short stories, Where the Money Went. Kirkus Reviews describes Canty's latest work as "delicate stories of love and relationships, infidelities, and break-ups, and occasional, tentative movements toward reconciliation." The Seattle P-I also touts Canty as "one of the most talented short-story writers working today."
7:30 p.m. // Elliott Bay Book Company, 101 South Main Street // FREE
TAKE A BITE OUT OF CRIME: The Seattle Police Department will be hosting their Seattle Night Out annual event in neighborhoods all across the city tonight. We happened to hear about this from a poster being left on our front door. It is happening in our neighborhood--Fremont--right in front of our damn house. We get to learn some crime prevention, under the pretense of a block party! They've warned us to bring something tasty, and from asking around, it seems to be a potluck of sorts, including meet-and-greets with the neighbors (which doesn't sound terrible). So in case your neighborhood doesn't happen to be having one, you are always welcome to join our party on the 4400 block in upper Fremont. Side note: The logo for this year's Seattle Night Out seems to look exactly like the logo for PBR--maybe it's a hint.
