We're Going to an "Auto Show" in "Burien"

Special to Seattlest by Tod Bookless.

If you don't want to fight the crowds at Seafair today, there are plenty of local alternatives. Today, we are visiting the First Annual Elks Hot Rod and Auto Show at the Burien Elks Lodge in Burien. The show is free to visitors, and there is a $1 raffle. They have burgers and dogs for sale, as well as a beer garden. The proceeds go to the Elk's charities.

With all of the modern distractions such as video games, the Interwebs, and texting, it is good to see that there are still young people who enjoy these shows. If you take your children to a show like this I guarantee that they will see something that they have never seen before. A BMW with the door in the front? Check. A Plymouth Roadrunner? Check.

The owners of these cars bring them out to share them with the public. They don't necessarily want little hands to fingerprint them all up, but they are usually happy to tell all about them to a curious young person.

If you walk through the car show and still have time on your hands, Burien Old Town is close by including the cool new library and the very excellent Goodie Gumdrops toy store. Even if you buy a burger at the car show, a coffee downtown, and a toy at Goodie Gumdrops, you will spend less than a day at the hydros, and all with no crowds and good parking.
