Gert's BBQ Officially Opens This Evening
Fans of yum will be descending on Columbia City this evening for the official opening of Gert's BBQ's mobile location. They'll be open tonight from 3-10 in the Columbia Plaza parking lot at 4801 Rainier Ave S.
We tried them out last Friday night thanks to a heads-up on Twitter, specifically Columbia City Blog -- who also have a copy of the menu posted so you can practice salivating ahead of time. (Speaking of Twitter, Gert's is on there. Follow for updates.)
We ordered two beef DDOTs (basically sliders), one chicken DDOT, a side of GBC (green bean casserole), and french fries. We managed not to eat it before getting it home and taking a picture. Our verdict? Bethany Jean Clement wasn't kidding when she called it "ass-kicking barbecue." The DDOTs were amazing (and we can't decide which meat is better) and the green bean casserole is divine. We thought the fries were decent but unexceptional, but Mrs. Seattlest loved them, so maybe we just weren't in the mood.
Gert's is great. We're not convinced it's better than Roy's BBQ -- especially their Georgia Gold sandwich -- but with Roy's, Jones, and now Gert's within a two-block radius, we're more convinced than ever that BBQ is to the Rainier Valley what Thai food is to the northern neighborhoods. It's an embarrassment of richness.
(And once you've tucked into your meat, you can have your pudding ice cream -- Full Tilt's new location is a pleasant three-block walk away.)
