We're Losing the Chicken Coop Race!

It seems as though 2009 will be the year of recession-inspired backyard chicken coops. (Those lawn-mowing goats are so 2007.) We've been pretty excited about all the recent chicken coop sightings around Seattle. Even if they are only a city-limited, three domestic fowl per single-family lot, we still think they're cute. However, we have recently learned that Seattle is lagging behind on the chicken coop craze.

Over on Chicken Bainbridge Island, it's been reported they have 400 backyard chicken coops on the island--with some coops housing up to 20 chickens. This past weekend, the Island marveled at its own urban chicken coop greatness (and raised money for Helpline House), as they hosted Tour de Coop, a self-guided backyard chicken coop tour. Select urban chicken farmers were able to show off their prized feather friends and their cozy coops--including the chicken palace--within varied city dwellings.

Now Seattle, if that doesn't get your goat...er...chicken, this past Saturday Portland also hosted their very own urban chicken coop tour.

Let's face it, in comparison, Seattle's urban chicken coop tour industry is lacking. But if you're ready to take up urban farming, Seattle Tilth offers City Chickens 101 class. Just remember, it's cute widdle chickes like these that need a coop to call home, too.

Portland has been doing the Tour de Coops for six years. It is the city with the highest number of urban chickens per capita of any city in the U.S. The Portland AIA and Portland Spaces Magazine gave honors to a chicken coop in each of their architectural award ceremonies last year.
