Better Know a CHBP Band: The Maldives and The Moondoggies

Like excited kids on Christmas Eve counting down the hours, here at Seattlest, we can’t wait till the clock hits 4 p.m. and Capitol Hill Block Party officially begins. After The Dutchess and The Duke strike those opening chords, the next 20 hours will be filled with plenty of amazing music and general merriment. (Here’s hoping those bottlenecking issues that the Matson reported on are finally controlled.)

While we are no doubt excited for the biggest draws of the CHBP, we’re most excited to see some of our local favorites. Over the coming day and a half, we’ll post some words we’ve exchanged with the bands to ensure you get to know them all just a little bit better before you are faced with making choices about the three stages when you’re on the ground.

First up, we present Seattlest’s favorite purveyors of rich Americana melodies, The Maldives and The Moondoggies.

The Maldives (Sat 6:30 p.m., Neumos, 21+) Jason Dodson - vocals/guitar

Self description of music - Homegrown American music.

Biggest influences - Bob Dylan and the Rolling Thunder Revue, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, The Boss, The Band. Lately I've been listening to a lot of Kanye West.

Band most excited about on the CHBP roster - Sonic Youth.

How CHBP compares to other festivals played or attended recently - It's gonna be hard to beat the free food and booze at Sasquatch, but I'm sure the girls will be prettier at the Block Party.

Best part of being a Seattle band - The weather. And KEXP.

Three favorite local bands right now - Zoe Muth and the Lost High Rollers, Grand Hallway, and the Moondoggies.

What people should expect when The Maldives take the stage - Faces melted, hearts broken. They should not expect to be "twanged."

The Moondoggies after the jump.

The Moondoggies (Sat 3:15 p.m., mainstage) Kevin Murphy - vocals/guitar

Self description of music - Rock and roll...harmonies, bare bones.... I don't like to describe music. I think music is an intangible thing, it's a feeling. I'll leave that up to other people.

Biggest influences - The Beatles, Nirvana, Skip James, Camper Van Beethoven, Richard Manuel and many more, on and on…

Band most excited about on the CHBP roster - Built to Spill. Though it's not the same day [as us], which is a bummer. I saw the Black Lips in Canada a long time ago and they were awesome...again FRIDAY...The Dutchess and The Duke...goddammit, I wanna go Friday! The Maldives will rock like they always do.

Best part of being a Seattle band - Hmmm...I don't know about being a Seattle band, but Seattle is a beautiful city. I can't compare it to anywhere else, ‘cause I'm sure being a Nashville band or a Portland band are good in their own ways. Playing music anywhere would make me happy, that's why I love music--it makes me happy. I've met some good people here.

Three favorite local bands right now - The Lights, Cosmic Panther Land Band, White Lightning.

What people should expect when The Moondoggies take the stage - Four guys who don't know what to say to the audience. Enjoyment for those who like what we do…maybe a couple new songs.
