Can't Miss It: Thursday

php59ms2IPM.jpg JAZZY: Guitar phenom John Pizzarelli and his wife, the chanteuse Jessica Molaskey, are setting up shop tonight at Jazz Alley for four days. John has carried on the tradition of his legendary father Bucky Pizzarelli, and as duo, he and his wife move fluidly from jazz to pop to torch, exploring the depths of the good old proverbial "American Songbook."

IRANIAN LIT: Mahbod Seraji moved to the US from his native Iran in the 1970s, but he never forgot the childhood experiences that shaped him, and that's what he explores in the coming-of-age novel The Rooftops of Tehran. Set in the pre-Islamic state era, the story follows an adolescent as he discovers the joys of reading, explores the ancient quarters of his city with his friends, and falls in love with the girl next door. As Iranians struggle over the results of the recent contested presidential election, The Rooftops of Tehran offers a window into a culture and a society still poorly understood by Americans.

HOT HOT HOT: There's a lot of jokes--and we mean a lot--that we could make about the annual Seattle fire fighters calendar. But we're not going to go there. No, the calendar supports a great cause, the Washington State Fire Fighters Burn Foundation, which supports preventative burn research as well as recovery support. It's an important service done by men and women who already put themselves on the line every day, and while the 2010 firefighters' calendar is unlikely to grace this writer's wall, we're behind them every inch of the way. Tonight, the official release takes place down at Showbox Sodo.

7 p.m. // Showbox Sodo // 1700 First Ave. S. // $25/$35, 21+
