Seattle Is Going to the Chickens

Neighborlogs news intern Lucas just posted this story about a couple raising chickens in the Central District--"City code permits up to three domestic fowl in addition to up to three other small animals on single-family lots"--which reminded us that we've also seen a chicken coop in Montlake, of all places! Quel agriculteur! UPDATE: Commenters confirm that chicken coops have been spotted in Wallingford and Ravenna, too. Look, they're cute!

Is there a good resource for urban ranchers to go to to see what the laws about livestock and fowl are in their city?

I'm moving to Bothell soon, and may want some chickens or a goat.

There's this chicken laws site that covers cities across the U.S. They say Bothell allows 3 chickens. Here's Bothell's Municipal Code, but while you have to have a license to run a "cattery," I see nothing about goats.

Tilth does this, teaches classes in chicken-coop-building and chicken-raising. Wrote about it here three years ago ...

  • We've got chickens in our back yard in Ravenna, and know of two more houses with coops within easy walking distance.

  • There's one in Wallingford on Latona and 53rd.
