M's Serve Baseball's Best Team; Lose Beltre: The Mariners started their road trip with a surprising 2-1 series win over the Dodgers, who have baseball's best record. The highlight was Felix Hernandez's nine-K performance on Saturday night, with homers by Griffey and Branyan providing the offense. Bad news came that night as well: Adrian Beltre will miss 6-8 weeks, he's getting surgery to remove painful bone spurs in his shoulder.
Coming up: An off-day Monday, then series at New York and at Boston.
Sounders Back in First-Place Race: A 3-0 win over Colorado wasn't as lopsided as the score indicates, as the Rapids missed several goal scoring opportunities. Still, it counts for three points, which pull our Sounders within three points of conference leaders Houston. Montero had another goal while Jaqua added two. Sounders also had injury news, midfield wizard Osvaldo Alonao left the game early with a hip injury. We'll know more on the severity tomorrow.
Coming up: A U.S. Open Cup match Wednesday @ Portland.
Storm Split With Sparks: A large Pride weekend crowd of nearly 10,000 cheered the Storm to a nail-biter of a victory Friday night in Seattle. Lauren Jackson had 32, but Swin Cash secured the win, getting a steal on the Sparks' final possession. Sunday in L.A. was a different story. The Storm lost by 27. Overall, a discouraging weekend, as the Sparks are without their two best players. The Storm should be dominating, not winning a home squeaker and getting obliterated on the road. Work to do.
Coming up: Wednesday @ Phoenix.
