Doesn't that one last slice of Flying Squirrel Pizza look good? Okay, maybe not, but only because we took the picture with our camera phone, and in haste because we didn't want to look like a yokel.
Though we were feeling rather yokel-ish, since we rarely venture to South Seattle. It's always been "Here Be Dragons" territory on our mental map of the city. (Our grandfather settled in Wallingford in the 1930's, and we've been based north of the Ship Canal ever since.)
Yet here was a hoppin' restaurant with a hip, attractive staff, serving the best pizza we can remember having in this city. We felt like De Gama. Or possibly, Drake.
Why's the pizza so good? It's the ingredients. Our "Sofia" pizza came with meats from Salumi. 'Nuff said.
Other ingredients from laudable sources: Flying Squirrel gets their BBQ chicken from Roy's BBQ. They get their other cured meats from Zoe's Meats. They get their ice cream from Molly Moon. (Not available on pizza...yet.)
As an app, we had a special pizza-rini with prawns. It was adorable and tasty. Don't know where the prawns were from. Possibly heaven.
Flying Squirrel Pizza is at 4920 South Genesee Street, near where the hydro races are. They do not have TVs. They do have a wall of mix tapes (bring in your own and you get 10% off your pizza). They also have an outdoor patio. Open for dinner only, seven days a week till 9:30, till 10 on Friday and Saturday night.
