SIFF Blipvert: Sweet Crude, True Adolescents

We went to see Sweet Crude because the Seattle documentarian behind it, Sandy Cioffi, was held and interrogated by the Nigerian military on her last trip over and we felt that was a good signal of her work being important. We're happy to announce that the Nigerian government could easily make Rotten Tomatoes' top critics list, because this film is a clear-eyed examination of a literally incendiary topic: When is it okay to use force as a political lever? It's also beautifully shot.

See Sweet Crude this Sunday at the Kirkland Performance Center, 1:30 p.m., or Saturday the 13th at the Egyptian, also 1:30 p.m.

Mark Duplass in True Adolescents
True Adolescents, besides being profanely hilarious, is a star-making vehicle for mumblecore's Mark Duplass. If you see one film about a Seattle indie rocker exiled to his aunt's place in Woodinville this year, this is the one. Along with a long-delayed coming-of-age story, director Craig Johnson delivers a love postcard to Washington living.

See True Adolescents at the Egyptian tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. Get there early--we bet it's SRO.

Completing our local-ish movie roundup, we agree with this guy about local film The Whole Truth. The Three Imaginary Girls reviewer called it "offensive."
