1979 NBA Finals Game 5 Viewing Parties Tonight
There is no doubt that the high water mark of Seattle’s professional sports history is the 1979 NBA Championship won by our dear, departed Seattle SuperSonics. It was 30 years ago today that DJ, Gus, JJ, Jack, Downtown Freddy Brown, and crew dispatched the Washington Bullets in the fifth and deciding game.
The win set off a wild few days in the Emerald City, and when that team returned home the following day, 20,000 people went to the airport to meet them. A few days later, an estimated 250,000 people lined the downtown streets for a parade in celebration. And no one burned anything down.
According to Nick Licata, none of this did anything for Seattle’s soul or wallet, but if you were there, you ain’t seen nothing like it since. In celebration of the 30th Anniversary, several great bars and restaurants will be showing the final game in that series all around town tonight.

The site was inspired by ScrewClay, which conjures up an ugly image that any self-respecting Sonic fan should shake out of their head. Maybe Aubrey McClendon would do it. If there’s money involved. He could use the money.
