POLL: Library Porn, Treasured Right or OMG WTF!!1!

Our post earlier today about the new, Red-Bullish atmosphere the library is promoting got us thinking about other things that might be classified as "undesirable" in a public space. As we understand it, Seattle Public Library uses no-pr0n filters on kids' area computers, but leaves the adult section...adult. In fact, "All users are asked to respect the privacy of other users and not attempt to censor or comment upon what others are viewing." What do you think?

  • Look, there is 1 1/2 reasons to look at porn, and 1 1/4 of them are to masturbate. I do not want to go and look at really big maps and see someone's dingle berries about to esplode, not even a ladies whoo-boo go woo-hoo no matter how much she reminds me of Felicia Day-- not while I'm looking at my maps.

For the other 1/4 of a reason to look at porn is research. In which case, if you can afford to research porn you can afford your own internet.

    END.

Ahh the research argument... didn't Pete Townsend pull that card to justify his kiddie porn dungeon?

I know we all love the Who but give me a fucking break, anybody else gets caught with child porn and they are ruined, somehow Pete Townsend has the same teflon skin John Gotti was using all those years because he got away with some heinous shit IMO.

  • Good point.

Therefore, if we make it a no-no to masturbate in public, we won't have to worry about what sites they're accessing on the computer, because we can take action based on observable behavior rather than trying to figure out what they're looking at on that filtered screen.

  • "Display" is up to the library -- they can install privacy filters on monitors. (I believe the SPL does that, at least in some places.) Most people surfing for porn at the library aren't intending to display it, I'd guess.

Lucrative niche for the Lusty Lady: private surfing rooms. Now hiring keyboard swampers.

People should not display in public images of conduct which is not permissible in public. Public indecency laws?
