What's Better Than Daft Punk? DAFT PUNK WITH LASERS!
A few weeks ago, Seattlest had the pleasure of attending the Seattle Laser Dome's latest show, Laser Daft Punk. Our love for Daft Punk has been completely irrational since their WaMu Center show, so between that and the fact that it'd been a while since our last laser show (Laser Plan B), we headed down with some friends to check it out.
The show isn't altogether that different from the Floyd-fest that comes to mind when you think of a laser show, but there's definitely more of a party vibe, as one would expect with Daft Punk's music. Honestly, it's a bit like a seated rave, since lasers and electronic music have always gone well together. Musically, it's Daft Punk's greatest hits, never a bad thing, and the visuals go beyond what we remember seeing last time, with plenty of custom graphics just for this show (more robots). The best part is that it ends early enough that you still have plenty of time to head out to the club afterwards to expend that energy you built up during the hour-long extravaganza.
One thing you'll want to be sure to do after the show is to head back to the laser booth and ask how the whole thing is run. We were surprised to learn that the entire thing is improvised. Sure, some shapes are pre-programmed, but there's someone actually twisting knobs, pushing buttons, and toggling switches to make it all happen; it's not some guy just pushing play on a computer. Instead, it's someone becoming one with a machine, a fact so appropriate it makes us wonder what's taken so long for Laser Daft Punk to become a reality.
Laser Daft Punk is at the Pacific Science Center Laser Dome at 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Bring a pillow if you're going to opt for the floor. $8.50. All ages.
