Flying to Safeco Cheaper Than Yankee Stadium Visit?

At the zenith of the luxury movement in sports: New Yankee Stadium, where the best tickets cost $2,625. Not per season--per game.

Faced with this absurdity, a Yankee fan has developed a solution. It's actually cheaper--far cheaper--to fly to Seattle and see the Yanks and Mariners play twice at Safeco Field than it would be to see the same two teams play just once in the Bronx.

An NYC podiatrist named Gary Cicio claims that you could fly to Seattle, stay in the city's best hotel for two nights, eat at the city's two best restaurants, and get top tix to both Saturday and Sunday's games for just $2,800.

Let's test that out:

Two non-stop RT tix from NYC to Seattle, leaving Fri. Aug 14, returning Sun. Aug 16: $698 (via Orbitz)

Two nights at the Fairmount Olympic Hotel: $658

Friday night dinner for two at Crush: Approx. $300

Saturday night dinner for two at Herbfarm: Approx. $500

Two Diamond Club seats for Saturday's game: $1798 on StubHub.

Two Diamond Club seats for Sunday's game: $1050 on StubHub.

The total? $4914.

We're not sure where Cicio got his $2800 from (maybe he thinks our best restaurants are Dick's and Ivar's), but his point stands. It is, in fact, cheaper to enjoy a first-class weekend in Seattle, and see two M's/Yankees games ($4914), than to see just one such game at Yankee Stadium ($5,250). And you'd still have money leftover to ship a king salmon home.

I think it's even cheaper to just get rid of the NY lifestyle and move to Seattle to become a Mariners fan. The savings with the cost of living will pay for season tickets to the mariners. I grew up as a Yankee fan myself and I'm done with them and just about done with NY too.

Plus, the Mariners win a game or two here and there, har har har.
