Know Thine Enemy: LA Galaxy

david-beckham.jpg On Mother’s Day, while you’re waiting for a table to open up at the Outback, the Sounders will be at Qwest Field for their first match against two-time MLS Champion LA Galaxy.

The Galaxy are best known for employing bendy international soccer star David Beckham in 2007 and 2008. Last fall he was lent to AC Milan, which is the sort of the thing you can do in soccer and not in a marriage.

It turned out that Beckham preferred playing in front of capacity crowds in Italy, rather than a couple thousand people in Columbus. Becks soon requested a permanent transfer to Milan. Both sides not wanting to give up the cash cow Beckham (that was not a Posh Spice joke), they bickered until finally agreeing that he would play in Italy through the end of the season in June, and then return to LA.

The Galaxy had a similar problem when it lent Landon Donavan to Bayern Munich. During the season Donavan announced that he didn’t want to return to Los Angeles, Munich then announced that the Shuttle Express would be at Mr. Donavon’s place around 9 a.m., and back to LA he went.

The point is, don’t be surprised when the LA Galaxy acts all weird when you ask to borrow their lawnmower.

Hey, speaking of Donavan, we asked our friend Jason, who actually knows what he’s watching when he sees soccer, to share his thoughts on Donavan as well as Galaxy head coach, and former US Coach, Bruce Arena.

"Donovan is a very good MLS player who puts up great numbers when the national team plays weaker competition. He has seven international goals against Cuba, for example.

His attempts to get a foothold in Europe have been pathetic. He tried playing for Leverkusen a couple times, but never stuck around long enough to earn a regular place in the lineup, preferring to return to California where he could be a big fish in a small pond.

Imagine Tim Lincecum deciding during his rookie season with the Giants to go back down to the minors after his first two appearances at the big league level. Sure, he'd have had better stats, but it wouldn't make him any more prepared to play at the top level.

I have mixed feelings about Bruce Arena. You have to give him credit for the surprising performance of the national team in the 2002 World Cup. However, the abomination that was the 2006 World Cup showing makes it tough to say that the 2002 team performed well because of his tactical brilliance."

The Galaxy’s mascot is Cozmo, an alien that was beamed down from space. According to the team he is "universally known as a goalkeeper who can stop shots traveling at the speed of light…and also possesses the speed and skill to play forward for any team on the planet."

Which begs the question, why isn’t he playing? For crying out loud, he's already wearing a uniform.

Hey, Cozmo, we don’t know what it’s like on the planet Gorlop IV, but here on earth if we wanna help our team, we stop rubbing some bald guy’s head with a towel, get our ass on the field, and start knocking down shots on goal.

One of the three Galaxy supporter clubs calls themselves The Los Angeles Riot Section. What is it with the MLS and civic tragedies?

Besides an MLS game, the best place in Los Angeles to see a Galaxy is the Griffith Observatory. Or so we’ve heard. During our two-plus years in LA, it was closed for construction. Now it’s re-opened and looks fantastic. Yes, we take this personally.

You should have chosen the image of Cozmo the space alien instead as your blog post picture because it is funnier.

They have a worse record than the Fire. It's fine, sure, number one scorer, but we have the number one keeper. I'm not worried. We're not talking about Chivas here. Galaxy couldn't take down RSL for goodness sake!
