Can't Miss It: Wednesday
PARTY DOWN FOR CHINATOWN: The ID Spring Roll is big food-filled fun times at the SoDo that raises money for SCIDpda, the International District's community development group. Featuring all kinds of Pan-Asian food (hello, spring-roll eating contest!), live music, martial arts, raffles/door prizes, and breakdancing care of the Massive Monkees, this ain't no boring charity event. Sign us up for at least 30 spring rolls.
6 p.m. // Showbox SoDo // 1700 1st Ave S // $90-125
WALK THE DINOSAUR: Until we create our own Jurassic Park-like post-cloning hellscape, we'll have to settle for Walking with Dinosaurs, the arena spectacular running at Key Arena through May 3rd. Based on the award-winning BBC TV series, Walking with Dinosaurs features fifteen life-size dinosaurs (the largest of which is 36 feet tall and 56 feet from nose to tail) designed by artists and scientists to recreate the terrible lizards and operated by master puppeteers. No worries that the kids won't be able to sit still for the whole thing: the show is a tight 96 minutes of awe-inspiring dinosaur goodness, including intermission.
7:00 p.m. // Key Arena // 305 Harrison St. // $19.50-$59.50
HELLO SOLO: We'll admit it--when we first saw the above trailer for Goodbye Solo, we were less than impressed. It looked like any other cheesy indie flick where a simple African shows the disillusioned American how to enjoy life, and we dismissed it outright until we saw the director's name: Ramin Bahrani. Iranian-American Bahrani happens to be one of the most promising up-and-coming directors today, and his first two feature films Man Push Cart and Chop Shop were devastatingly true-to-life portraits of the immigrant experience. With that in mind, we expect so much more out of this film, something pitch-perfectly touching and nuanced, along the lines of The Visitor. In advance of its theatrical run at the Varsity starting May 8th, Goodbye Solo debuts at the Northwest Film Forum tonight, with Ramin Bahrani in attendance. We've got two pairs of tickets to the screening, so fill in your name and email below for a chance to win. We'll be drawing two winners at 2 p.m.
7 p.m. // Northwest Film Forum // 1515 12th Ave. // $20
