Way back in November we wrote that we were going to start following the Blazers. We got off to a fast start; however, as the NBA season ground on and the Huskies took off, we kind of fell off the map on that one. The December snow canceled our trip to the Rose Garden--well, that and the lack of any planning whatsoever.
Yet when we do catch the Blazers, we enjoy them, we scan Blazers Edge every once and a while, and every time we watch Trailblazers Courtside on Comcast, we feel that Mike Rice could be the unintentional comedy-providing uncle we’ve never had.
So we are going to do our best to watch and root on the red and black during the playoffs. As we’ve always said, it’s hard to just become a fan of team, since a real rooting interest has to grow organically, like townhouses.
Obviously, what we want most of all during the Blazer playoff run is a mid-air collision between David Stern and Howard Schultz’s private planes. (We would also be hoping for the wreckage to land on Aubrey McClendon--though the guy is so hard up for cash that he would probably love the chance to get at his life insurance policy.)
Failing that, we would like to come away with a deeper affection for the Blazers, and fingers crossed that we’ll be feeling some pain the night the Blazers are eliminated.
The fourth-seeded Blazers are playing the fifth-seeded Rockets starting Saturday night. [Reflective sigh] Post-season series with Houston were always fun (See 1993, 1996, 1997). A possible game seven is scheduled for May 2.
Oh one more thing: Brandon Roy, you are the greatest basketball player, nay, person of all time. Nate McMillan, if we ever met you it would be like an episode of "The Chris Farley Show."

Friendly Folk-Pop for the Kids: Hey Marseilles at Vera This Saturday

As if to thwart my similar plans, the NBA scheduled Portland/Houston game 1 at the same time as the Sounders game. And the Mariners are going then, too. They're going to love me at the sports bar -- "can you turn that TV to 687, and that one to 5, and that one to 206, please?"
The NBA screwed over Seattle. Luckily we have a soccer team that will now get my money instead.
I'm gonna go with Sherman Alexie's take on the matter:
