The famed Seattle-based crab fisherman of the Discovery Channel's Deadliest Catch will kick off season five tonight at 9 p.m. with new episodes. Yay!

We have a weird fascination with this show, can't pinpoint it exactly, perhaps it's seeing the boats in Ballard, watching Hollywood awkwardly chase after crab fisherman, or just pure admiration for their hard (and crazy) work, all to provide us the crabs that show up at the Pike Place Market.

Regardless, they are Seattle's good ol' boys, and we can't wait to see what this season brings.

  • I chatted with some of the deck hands and captains a while ago. They're all actually pretty nice people.

I definitely think people in the NW enjoy this show much more. Most people around here either know a fisher/crabber or a friend of a friend is. It's amazing to see how much of a grueling job it is, enough to scare me away from ever pursuing it. I met a guy at Sea-Tac last Christmas Eve who was based out of Dutch Harbor and was just quitting the trade. He had some crazy stories, a gift from Sig with him, and talked about finding a sinking ship with 2 dead crewman. It seemed like the job had scarred him for life, I hate to judge him after only spending 30 mins talking to him, but I think he had some psychological issues leaving his family and finding dead sailors, etc.
