Dishin': Pike Street Fish Fry is Fine

pike street fish fry fried catfish 320.jpg Last week, Dishin' delivered the scoop on fried shrimp heads from our favorite sushi restaurant in Seattle.

For those who are a little squeamish about such a seafood order, we offer an excellent alternative: Pike Street Fish Fry.

We were long overdue in checking out this Capitol Hill hotspot. (Must be that we're getting too old for shows at Neumos next door.) Having finally made it, we were too early in the year for fried whole smelts (a perfect excuse to go back), so we took the recommendation to try the catfish ($7, includes fries).

Good call. Perfectly crisp on the outside, with the fish amazingly moist on the inside. A little tartar sauce added welcome tanginess. The cup's a little deceiving, as there are only three chunks of fish hovering above a lot of fries, but you can add a side of slaw ($2) for freshness and have a fulfilling little meal. Or go full-out fry-daddy and get the frito misto ($6) and you'll be crunching your way to cholesterol-filled (but fun) ecstasy.

No, no, no! The original batter has changed, they no longer use pristine peanut oil but old vegetable oil, they're on their fourth kitchen manager in less than a year, everything is greasy and dark, dark, dark. I've loved this place, but it's gone astray. Stay away!

... if only they'd reliably stay open "late"!

how a fried food place can't turn oil into gold by staying open until after a show is beyond my comprehension.
